Location

Located in Dashanzi Art District (original 798 Factory), the heart of a growing art and culture community in Beijing.

History

It was designed by the East Germans architects in the Bauhaus style in the early 1950s. Through the reconstruction and redesigning with the contemporary aesthetics by artists, the space combines the past, present, and future of the "New China" and the unique meaning of the socialistic culture.

Interesting Spots in 798 Art District

AT Café: A fashionable café whose notable feature is a bare-brick dividing wall punctured by massive holes, AT serves as the unofficial canteen for the artists and gallery staff who work in the area.

White Space: Foreign art dealers are already present in numbers in 798.

Timezone 8: It is one of Beijing’s best art bookshops. It also incorporates a gallery that specializes in photographic art.

Public sculpture: Throughout the 798 compound large pieces of sculpture stand beside the lanes, pathways and in courtyards. They are “in storage,”, awaiting proper homes or buyers.

South Gate Space: Though not a gallery, the South Gate is an exciting, small performance space, used for theater, dance, and music.

798 Photo Gallery: The gallery hosts regularly changing exhibitions of both Chinese and foreign photographers, and also has a couple of mezzanine levels where a selection of photographic prints for sale are displayed.

Travel Tips:

1. It will take more than twenty minutes to walk around the Art Zone. You can buy a map at galleries or bars, or just wander.
2. You can either take a taxi or bus to Beijing 798 Art Zone. However, taxis are not allowed to drive into the zone.
3. When night falls, the zone is poorly lit.
