• Chongqing Introduction
  • Chongqingis called Yu for short. It is situated in the confluence between the Yangtze River and the Jialingjiang River

     

    Located in the south-east Sichuan basin, Chongqing is a municipality directly under the Central Government, and is Chinas important industrial base, with an area of 23,114 square kilometers and a population of 30 million.

    Chongqings main topography is hilly land sloping from the south and north towards the Yangtze River valley. It has the sub-tropical climate, with an annual average temperature of 18 degree Celsius, rainfall of 1,100 millimeters, and a frost-free period of 320-340 days. Its well known for foggy weather.

    It abounds in coal, iron, natural gas, gypsum, limestone and water resources. Its main industries are machinery, metallurgy, chemicals, foodstuff and textiles. Chongqing holds an important position in China in aluminum processing, machine tool and instrument manufacturing and inland-water shipbuilding. In agriculture, it produces large quantity of rice, rapes, peanuts, sugarcanes, tobacco, oranges, silk-cocoons and pigs. 

    Chongqing is the largest commercial center and land and water communication hub in South-West China. The port of Chongqing is the biggest in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River
    Known as a "Mountain City", Chongqing was constructed on the mountain slopes and along the riversides. It has a long history and numerous scenic spots and historical sites. Its renowned in particular for gardens with unique beauty. 

    Efforts are being made to turn Chongqing into a modern metropolis with the largest foreign market oriented industrial base in West China.


    On 14th of March, 1997, Chongqing was officially proclaimed the fourth municipality directly under the jurisdiction of the Central Government.

    Hongyan Cun (the Red Crag Village)

    During the Kuomintang-Communist alliance against the Japanese during WWII, the Red Crag Village outside Chongqing was used as the offices and living quarters of the Communist representatives to the Kuomintang. Many famous leaders, such as Zhou Enlai, Ye Jianying, Deng Yingchao once stayed here. On August 28th, 1945, Mao Zedong had stayed in this place when he came to Chongqing to negotiate with Ching Kai-shek.

     

    There are many historical relics here: the Guiyuan, the right place where Mao Zedong put down his signature on the agreement of negotiation and where he met the personages of various circles; No.50, one of Zhou Enlais important offices during that period; the former residence of Sun Yat-sen; the living quarters for General Stilwell and General Marshall; the official mansion of Chiang Kai-shek, and so on.

     

    Chongqing - Dazu Rock Carvings

    In Dazu County, some 165 kilometers away from Chongqing, are more than 40 sites of stone carvings with over 50,000 statues of Buddha completed from the late Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty. The grottoes on the Beishan Hill and Baoding Hill are the largest in scale, richest in content and most refined in artistic skill.
