• Dazu Rock Carvings
  • Dazu Rock Carvings are a magnificent set of Buddhist sculptures carvedazu rock carvingsd in stone cliffs in Dazu, Chongqing, China. They were designated a World Heritage Site in 1999.

    The Dazu Rock Carvings contains all the Cliffside carvings in Dazu County. The collection is composed of the rock carvings in Beishan( Shan Means Mountain, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shimenshan as well as Shizhuanshan, all of which are of the highest artistic attainment and demonstrate the most exquisite skills.

     

    There are over 50,000 sculptures at Dazu, accompanied by over 100,000 Chinese characters of inscriptions and epigraphs. All the rock carvings can be viewed in natural light and are connected by walkways and paths.

     

    The construction of Dazu Rock Carvings began in 650, and continued into the 17th century. Thriving since the end of the 9th century, when the grotto art of north China began to decline, the Dazu Rock Carvings are an outstanding representative of Chinas grotto art in the middle and late period of ancient China.

     

    Other famous rock carvings are Yungang Grottoes, Mogao Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes and  Dafo Leshan

    Bei Shan: Take the road uphill for 150m from the northwest corner of Dazu town, then follow the stone steps and paths ascending Bei Shan for 1 km to the site entrance.
    Baoding Shan: Buses from Dazus station leave 2x/hr until around 4pm
