    History of Tianjin

    The formation of Tianjin has undergone a long period of time in the history. The name of Tianjin, first emerged during the early period of Emperor Yongle of Chinas Ming Dynasty, means a ferry crossing where the Son of Heaven has passed. In the second year of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1404), Tianjin started building fortifications and defenses as a strategic military place. In 1860 Tianjin was turned into an open port. For years its industrial production and port trade volume were only second to Shanghai, becoming the second largest commercial city in China and the biggest financial and trading center in north China. After the founding of the Peoples Republic of China Tianjin was turned into a municipality directly under the central authorities.

    Population of Tianjin

    There are 51 minority nationalities in Tianjin. At present, Tianjinhas a population of 10.43 million permanent residents, including9,393,100 registered residents. Of all the population in Tianjin,the agricultural population is 3,769,100 and the non-agriculturalpopulation is 5,624,000. With a birth rate of 7.44‰ and a deathrate of 6.01‰, Tianjin has a natural population growth rate of1.43‰. Tianjin is now in a period of low population growth rate.

    Mt. Panshan

    Spreading the shades of dusk, Mt. Panshan is shrouded in mist and thin floating clouds and formed magnificent sights of "being fine but not fine; not raining but raining" which called "Sanpan Muyu". It means "raining in the dusk on Mt. Panshan" and is the fourth of "the ten most famous scenic spots" in Tianjin.

     

    Mt. Panshan, 12-kilometers northwest of Jixian county of Tianjin, was reputed as the "the First Mountain in the East of Beijing". Its highest peak, named Guayue, also Hanging-up-Moon Peak, is about 864 meters high. On the mountain, many temples, pagodas, carved stelae and stones are dotted here and there. Like other emperors through past ages, Qianlong, emperor of the Qing dynasty, visited the Mt. Panshan several times. He once praised: "Had I known Mt. Panshan earlier, why should I have toured down south of the Yangtze River.

    Tiancheng Temple

    It is also known as the Fushan Temple. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and expanded and repaired in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The main buildings include the Great Hall, the Side Hall, the Sanjian Hall, and the Jiangshan Yilan Pavilion, etc. The stele Record of Touring the Panshan Mountain prepared according to the order of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty was erected in front of the eastern Side Hall of the Main Hall, and a gallery of over 40 meters long stands there too.
